Our parent association, Local School Community Organization (LSCO), holds regular monthly meetings at school. Our principal also hosts monthly, “Meeting with the Principal” sessions and sends out monthly newsletters to facilitate the flow of information and keep communication lines open between home and school. |

Frequently discuss your child's school work and reflection statements to stimulate thinking. Self-reflection is the key to visualizing a tentative career goal.
Encourage volunteer experiences, mentoring, job-shadowing, internships and/or school-to-work opportunities. |

| Below are a few reputable organizations located in Metro Detroit that provide positive mentoring, resources and recreational activities for young people. |
| Encourage Me I’m Young (EMIY) |
EMIY was established to help give students the desire and ability to make a huge difference in society. They promote character development, education, and initiate literacy projects. EMIY puts a lot of emphasis on proper placement and ongoing training of mentors, as well as diversity and propelling our children's future. EMIY works closely with the school system and parents to create enrichment programs to enhance education.
We believe a child deemed “bad” just needs the key to unlock the “good”. Children must be equipped with the tools and motivation to perform above average. We help to make education interesting, inspirational, and fun. Visit our website at www.emiyworld.com
GradeCheck®
GradeCheck® Corporation provides academic guidance to all high school students who are hoping to receive an academic or athletic scholarship from a college or university.
GradeCheck® Corporation was founded in 1997 and incorporated in 2004. The company’s founder, Shelia McBride, established GradeCheck® because as a parent of a student athlete, she felt she had an obligation to understand the NCAA eligibility requirements to ensure her son met them.
During the process of monitoring her son’s grades and test scores, McBride developed a system that simplified her tracking process. Using this system, she monitored her son’s academic progress throughout his high school career. The system allowed her to determine what requirements he still needed to meet and what areas he needed to strengthen.
The system not only allowed her to keep track of his progress, but also presented his eligibility status in a way that he could understand. The information motivated him to study harder. At the end of his senior year, he was declared eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse to receive an athletic scholarship from an intercollegiate program.

A Step Ahead Group
The A Step Ahead Group is a non-profit organization that started out as a mentorship program in November 2004 in the city of Ypsilanti, MI. The program targets urban youth 8-22 years of age. While nurturing youth every week, A Step Ahead Group has also taken various field trips to colleges, outdoor camping, family activities and inviting guess speakers to share their experience living in this global society.
The program focuses on building confidence, self-awareness and knowledge in urban youth. Topics of the program include African-American contributions to society, understanding ancient African history and many others topics.
Our organization incorporates recreation as an emotional outlet from the conditions that affect youth and their mental growth. The mentorship program is currently at 50 participants and mentors. The program is so effective that we are increasing in numbers each week. The A Step Ahead Group is also involved in the community by providing motivational speaking to various social groups and troubled teens. On many occasions, the mentors of A Step Ahead Group made trips to juvenile centers and local schools throughout the community encouraging youth to "Think Outside the Box".
